Search marketing for Australian businesses in 2026 runs across three channels rather than one. Most businesses are still working on the first alone.
If you want the full explanation of what SEO, GEO and AEO each are, our complete 2026 search marketing guide covers that ground. This article is the operating plan: what to do, in what order, over the next 90 days.
The Three Channels at a Glance
| SEO | GEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | “How do I do X?” | “What are my options?” | “Who should I use?” |
| Where you appear | Google results | Cited inside AI answers | Named as a recommendation |
| Lead intent | Mixed | Early stage | Purchase ready |
| Share of effort | Most of it | Overlaps with SEO | Small but high value |
The important thing about that last row: these aren’t three separate workloads. Roughly 70% of the work serves all three channels at once. The specialised part is smaller than it looks.
Weeks 1–2: Audit Before You Build
Start with a visibility baseline, because you can’t prioritise without knowing which channel you’re weakest in.
Search your category three ways: in Google, as a customer would phrase it; in ChatGPT, asking for recommendations in your city; and in Perplexity, asking a research-style question about your service.
Record who appears in each. Most Australian businesses find they appear in one of the three and not the other two, and that gap tells you where to start.
Then check the fundamentals: your business name, address and phone number across every platform they appear on. Inconsistencies here undermine all three channels simultaneously and take an afternoon to fix.
Weeks 3–6: The Shared Foundation
This is the work that serves every channel, and it’s where most of the return sits.
Technical health. PageSpeed above 70 on mobile, canonical tags correct, structured data on key pages. AI tools and search engines both rely on being able to parse your pages cleanly.
FAQ content built around purchase questions. What it costs, how long it takes, how you compare to the alternative, what happens if something goes wrong. Question-and-answer formatting is what AI tools quote most readily, and it earns featured snippets in Google at the same time.
E-E-A-T signals. Content written from genuine experience with specific numbers in it. “We improved load time from 6.2 seconds to 2.5” is citable. “We improve load times” is not.
Weeks 7–12: Channel-Specific Work
Once the foundation is in place, the specialised work is fairly light.
For SEO: keyword research mapped to the right page types, then two to four pieces of content a month against that list. Local SEO if you’re a service business.
For GEO: publish content with data points worth quoting — original numbers from your own work, comparisons, benchmarks. Pursue mentions on sites that already carry authority in your category.
For AEO: sharpen your positioning to one specific sentence, then build the proof around it. Named Google reviews that describe the actual service. Case studies with verifiable figures. Certifications that can be checked against a public directory.
What to Measure
Each channel needs a different measure, which is why single-number reporting misses two thirds of the picture.
- SEO: positions and impressions in Google Search Console
- GEO: whether your content gets cited when you ask AI tools research questions in your category
- AEO: whether you’re named when you ask AI tools for a recommendation, checked monthly
- All three: brand-name searches in Search Console, which tend to rise as AI visibility grows
The Order Matters
The most common mistake we see is businesses jumping to AEO because it sounds like the newest opportunity, before their technical foundation or positioning is sorted.
AI tools recommend businesses they can describe confidently. If your site is slow, your details are inconsistent across platforms and your positioning is vague, there’s nothing for them to work with. The foundation isn’t a prerequisite because it’s traditional — it’s a prerequisite because the new channels read from it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to do all three at once?
No, and most businesses shouldn’t. Get the shared foundation right first — it moves all three. Then add channel-specific work in whichever area your audit showed the largest gap.
Which channel produces leads fastest?
AEO leads convert best because the intent is highest, but volume is low. SEO produces the most volume. GEO sits between the two and mostly feeds the other two by building citable authority.
How much of this can a small business do in-house?
The audit and the consistency work, comfortably. Technical fixes and content strategy are where most businesses bring in help, largely because the mistakes are expensive to unwind.
Is it too late to start with AEO?
Not in most Australian categories. Very few local businesses have taken deliberate steps yet, which is exactly why the window is worth using.
How long before any of this shows results?
Technical improvements show in weeks. AEO visibility often moves within two to three months if you already have reviews and consistent details. SEO content takes three to six months.
