Local SEO for Sydney Businesses: What Actually Moves the Map Pack

For a Sydney business serving customers within a 20 kilometre radius, the local pack — the map results with three businesses above the organic listings — is worth more than page one of the ordinary results.

It sits higher, it shows ratings and opening hours before anyone clicks, and the people looking at it have usually already decided to buy. Someone searching “emergency electrician Parramatta” is not conducting research.

Most businesses treat their Google Business Profile as an address listing they filled in once. It’s closer to a second website, and it’s ranked by criteria almost nobody looks up.

How Google Decides Who Appears

Three factors, in Google’s own framing: relevance, distance and prominence.

Relevance is how well your profile matches what was searched. This is the part you control most directly through categories, services and description.

Distance is how close you are to the searcher. You cannot change this, which is the single most important thing to understand about local SEO — a business in Chatswood will not rank in Cronulla searches no matter how good its profile is.

Prominence is how well known you are, drawn from reviews, mentions across the web, and your ordinary organic authority.

That middle factor explains most of the frustration we hear. If you serve all of Sydney from one location, you will rank strongly near that location and weakly elsewhere. The answer isn’t a better profile — it’s either more locations, or a strategy that doesn’t depend on the map pack for the suburbs you can’t reach.

Categories Are the Highest-Leverage Field

Your primary category does more for relevance than anything else on the profile, and most businesses choose it once and never revisit it.

Pick the category that describes what you primarily do, not the broadest one available. “Electrician” beats “Contractor”. Then add secondary categories for genuine services — but only real ones. Stuffing unrelated categories dilutes relevance rather than expanding reach.

A useful exercise: search your main keyword, click the three businesses in the local pack, and look at their categories. Google is telling you directly what it considers relevant for that search.

The Fields That Actually Move Ranking

FieldEffectHow often to revisit
Primary categoryHighAnnually, or when services change
Services listHighQuarterly
Reviews (volume and recency)HighOngoing
Business descriptionModerateAnnually
PhotosModerate — affects clicks more than rankMonthly
PostsLow for rank, useful for conversionWeekly to fortnightly
Q&ALow for rank, high for pre-sale objectionsQuarterly

The Q&A section is the most overlooked item on that list. You can ask and answer your own questions, and doing so lets you handle the objections that stop people calling — parking, after-hours availability, whether you service a particular suburb, minimum job size.

Reviews: Volume, Recency and Wording

Reviews influence both ranking and whether anyone clicks once you rank.

Volume matters, but recency matters more than most owners expect. Forty reviews with the most recent from 2023 reads worse than fifteen with three from last month.

The wording matters too. A review saying “great service” tells Google nothing. A review saying “replaced our switchboard in Marrickville, arrived same day” contains a service and a suburb. You can’t script reviews, but you can ask in a way that prompts specifics: rather than “could you leave us a review”, try “if you have a minute, it helps if you mention what we did and where”.

Respond to all of them, including the negative ones. The response is read by the next prospect, not by the reviewer, and a measured reply to an unfair review often does more for you than the review does against you.

NAP Consistency, and Why It’s Tedious but Necessary

Your business name, address and phone number should be byte-identical everywhere they appear — your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, LinkedIn, industry directories, the Shopify Partner Directory if you’re listed.

“Suite 3, 100 Barangaroo Ave” and “Ste 3/100 Barangaroo Avenue” are different strings to a machine. Inconsistency reduces Google’s confidence that these listings describe one business.

This same consistency now feeds AI recommendations, so the work counts twice — see our article on getting AI tools to recommend your business.

Service Area Businesses

If you travel to customers rather than receiving them, hide your address and set service areas instead. A tradesperson displaying a residential address looks less professional and gains nothing.

Set service areas honestly. Listing twenty suburbs you’d rather not drive to produces enquiries you’ll decline, and declined enquiries still cost you the phone call.

Location Pages on Your Own Site

The map pack is only half of local search. The organic results underneath it are winnable in suburbs where your distance works against you in the pack.

That means genuine pages for the areas you serve — with specific content about the work you’ve done there, not the same paragraph with the suburb name swapped out. Google has been discounting templated location pages for years, and a dozen thin ones will do less for you than three substantial ones.

Where to Start

This week: Open your Google Business Profile and check the primary category against the three businesses currently in the local pack for your main keyword. Fix your NAP anywhere it differs from your website.

This month: Fill out the services list properly, add five Q&A entries covering your most common pre-sale questions, and start asking for reviews in a way that prompts specifics.

Next 90 days: Build two or three substantial location pages for the suburbs where you want organic visibility, and set a fortnightly rhythm for GBP posts and photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does local SEO take to work?

Category and profile changes can show within two to four weeks. Review-driven improvement is slower and more gradual. Location pages follow ordinary SEO timelines of three to six months.

Can I rank in suburbs I’m not located in?

In the map pack, only marginally — distance is weighted heavily. In the organic results below it, yes, with proper location pages. Anyone promising map pack rankings across all of Sydney from one address is overselling.

Do GBP posts affect ranking?

The evidence for direct ranking impact is weak. They do affect whether someone chooses you once you appear, which is worth doing on its own terms.

Should I respond to negative reviews?

Yes, calmly and factually. The audience is the next prospect reading it, not the person who wrote it. Defensive replies do more damage than the original review.

Is it worth paying for citation-building services?

Usually not. A handful of relevant, genuine directory listings beats hundreds of low-quality ones, and bulk citation services frequently introduce the NAP inconsistencies you’re trying to avoid.
